Hi! I’m teaching two different sessions during Handweavers Guild of America’s (@instahga) Spinning & Weaving Week, a virtual celebration of fiber art, October 2 – 8.

Wednesday, October 4th at 1:30 PM EDT (UTC 5:30 PM), I’ll be sharing the story of my coiled basketry journey over the past 40 years in a 30-minute talk, The Magic & Mystery of Coiled Basketry. While my designs have always been inspired by music and the interplay and movement of color, in recent years, my work has become more intuitive and improvisational. The creative process, from first inspiration through the finished object, has become deeper, more magical, and more mysterious and each new piece is a revelation well beyond its original inspiration. While this presentation focuses on my coiled basketry work, the magic and mystery I’ve experienced can be applied to any art practice and I hope it will inspire others to become more free and more improvisational in their work.

Thursday, October 5th at 3:00 PM EDT (UTC 9:00 PM), I’ll be teaching Color Journaling as a Design Tool. I began Color Journaling about 10 years ago as a way to loosen up my design process. Since then, I have been teaching Color Journaling as a design technique as well as a way to feel freer using color. In this Art Sparks session, I will briefly share the evolution of Color Journaling in my own studio practice, give a demonstration of the basic color journaling exercise I use and teach to my students, followed by a discussion about the ways this technique can open creativity and help expand participants’ use of color in their own studio practices.
